Report for the TiME Committee

by Jerry Kissick

Greetings TiME committee members and friends of the TiME committee. I want to thank all who have contributed to our newsletter and who have volunteered to contribute in the future and to again express my thanks to Renae Weber for editing the newsletter and to Phil Thurber for maintaining our web page.

This newsletter continues to be published totally electronically on the TiME committee homepage. Anyone wishing to contribute an article for the newsletter or having a suggestion for something to be added to the homepage, please send them to me at

jkissick@pcc.edu.

The TiME committee will again be joining the other AMATYC committees in a Committee Showcase near the registration area at the AMATYC conference in Phoenix on Thursday. I would appreciate any suggestions the committee members have as to what we should put on display to encourage AMATYC members to join and support the committee. Last year we displayed our goals and objectives, position papers, and samples of the TiME newsletter.

As the time for the conference grows near, I want to prepare an agenda for the committee meetings. Anyone who has a technology related topic which you would like to discuss, please e-mail me and I will add it to our discussion list for the conference. To help with your planning for the conference, our committee meetings are scheduled for Friday 11/15 from 12:30 PM-1:30 PM and on Saturday 11/16 from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM.

The TiME committee is sponsoring a panel discussion at the AMATYC conference dealing with the use of technology in the high schools and its effects on the preparation and abilities of the students we are seeing in the community colleges. This discussion is scheduled for 1:30 on Thursday afternoon. The panel discussion will be moderated by Wade Ellis from California and nationally recognized for his leadership in the use of technology in mathematics education. The panel members are Ed Anderson, an Arizona high school and community college educator, Anne Ziegler, a high school and community college educator from Arkansas, Emily Woods, former WAMATYC president and currently a public school educator in Missouri and Karen Longhart a High School educator from Kalispell, Montana, representing NCTM. I encourage all committee members to support this panel discussion.

As a part of our liaison to the Distance Learning committee, Wayne Mackey and I have agreed to be members of a panel which will be discussing assessment for distance learning courses. This discussion is scheduled for Friday 11/15 from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. I also encourage everyone interested in distance learning to attend this discussion.

I hope that fall classes are going well for everyone and I look forward to seeing all of you in Phoenix especially at our TiME committee meetings.

Jerry
